About this pattern
This teddy starts small and stays small, with each leg worked flat from R1 through R3-5 before the two halves meet. Once joined at R6, the body continues in the round through R7-11, so there is no long stretch of plain rounds to lose track of. A separate strip handles the bow, worked in its own short run of rows and finished off at R6.
The shaping sits at the join: two legs crocheted side by side, then bridged with chains before the body closes around them at the hole. That join is the point to slow down, since the stitch count has to land evenly on both legs for the round to close flat. Decreases arrive right after, bringing the body in at the top so stuffing stays contained before fastening off.
- Chain and work the first short row from the second chain to set up the leg.
- Repeat the same few rows to build a second matching leg, leaving the yarn uncut on the last one.
- Join the two legs with a couple of chains on each side so the body can be worked in one continuous round.
- Continue around the body for several rounds, then decrease steadily to close the top opening.
- Sew the gap between the legs closed and set the glass eyes before adding the fiberfill.
- Crochet the small bow strip separately, fasten off, and sew it to the finished head.
What goes wrong
- Legs joined with mismatched stitch counts Count stitches on each leg before working the join chains. An uneven count on either side throws off the first body round.
- Cutting yarn too early on the second leg Leave the yarn attached on the second leg as instructed so the join round can continue straight into the body without a fresh join.
- Stuffing after the hole closes Push fiberfill into the legs and lower body while the decrease round is still open. Once closed, there is far less room to pack it in evenly.
- Beads placed before the head is shaped Hold off setting the glass eyes until the head has enough stuffing to show its final curve, so placement sits even on both sides.

Finish
- Weave in the starting and ending tails from both legs before joining them, so no loose ends get trapped inside the body.
- Stuff the legs and body firmly with fiberfill as the decrease rounds bring the top closed, working stuffing in before the hole shrinks too far.
- Sew the gap between the legs shut with the long tail left after fastening off, then attach the bow to the head last.
Bigger or smaller
- Smaller
- Drop to a finer thread with a smaller hook, which tightens every stitch and shrinks the finished bear while keeping the same sequence of rounds.

FAQs
Asked and answered
These answers came from whoever first published the pattern, kept word for word.
Why leave the yarn attached after the second leg?
The pattern joins both legs into one body round right after the second leg finishes. Cutting the yarn there would mean rejoining for no reason, so working straight through saves a step.
What are the glass beads for?
The 2 mm glass beads are used as the bear's eyes. They are set into the head once it has enough stuffing to hold their position firmly.
Does the bow need to be stuffed?
No. The bow is a flat strip worked in its own short set of rows and sewn to the head after being fastened off, with no fiberfill involved.
How is the face added after crocheting?
The mouth, nose and eyebrows are embroidered with black floss once the head is finished. Cheeks are tinted afterward with a dry pastel crayon for a soft blush.
