About this pattern
This hooded scarf turns a plain single crochet scarf into a wearable hood, worked row by row across the scarf body and then the hood section. The bulk of the piece is straightforward single crochet rows, but the hood section introduces a color-block sequence in black and red that repeats until the hood reaches its full height. Once that section is long enough, the piece folds and seams to become a functional hood rather than a flat panel.
- Work the flat scarf portion first in single crochet before any hood shaping begins.
- Mark the fold point and the hood boundary on the finished scarf with stitch markers.
- Rejoin black yarn at the marked point and single crochet across to set up the hood base.
- Alternate red and black yarn row by row, carrying the unused strand as the hood grows.
- Fold the hood section in half and single crochet across the top edge to join it.
- Weave in ends and fasten off once the seam is complete.
What goes wrong
- Not carrying the unused yarn Lay the resting color along the top of the previous row and crochet over it as instructed. Skipping this leaves loose strands trapped inside the work or dangling on the back.
- Marking the fold and hood boundary loosely Place stitch markers precisely where the pattern indicates before attaching the hood yarn. A shifted marker throws off where the base row starts and where the fold lands.
- Seaming the hood with the wrong sides together Fold the hood with right sides together before single crocheting across the top. Seaming with wrong sides together turns the finished seam to the outside.

Main Pattern
Foundation Chain
Start with black yarn: Create a slip knot, then chain 18 (or more for a wider scarf, but ensure an even number).
Row 1
Skip the first chain from the hook. Single crochet in the second chain and each chain across. At the end, chain one and turn.
Row 2
Skip the first stitch (which is the chain stitch from previous row). Start a single crochet in the second stitch, but switch colors to red in the middle of the stitch (when you have two loops remaining on the hook). For the rest of Row 2, alternate between single crochet and chain one, skipping a stitch in between, and making sure to carry and crochet over the unused yarn.Switch colors back to black: when you have three stitches left. Use the last single crochet in the row to switch colors, carrying the yarn as before.
Row 3
With black, chain one and turn. Single crochet in the second stitch from the hook and the next, making sure to pull up and crochet over the red yarn. Continue single crocheting in each stitch and chain space across the row.Repeat row 2 and 3: alternating colors as described, for the length of the scarf. Aim for approximately 50 inches (127 cm) or to your personal preference. When desired length is achieved, cut the yarn and fasten off.
Creating the Hood
Determine the start of the hood: On the finished scarf, measure and mark approximately 19 inches (48 cm) from one end. This section will become the hood.
Fold the scarf in half to find the middle: of the hood section, then mark with stitch markers around 9.5 inches (24 cm) from the fold, translating to about 34 rows from the fold.
Hood Base Row
Starting the hood: Attach black yarn at one marker and single crochet to the other marker. This creates the base row for the hood.
Hood Rows
Repeat the scarf pattern: (rows 2 and 3) up the hood, switching between black and red (or black and gray for visibility), until the hood measures about 12.5 inches (32 cm) tall.
Close Hood
Closing the hood: Fold the hood in half with the right sides together. Using black yarn, single crochet across the top to join the hood together. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
Join
Step 1Weave in all loose ends and block the scarf and hood to finalize the dimensions and shapes.
Finish
- Weave in every loose end left from the color changes and the final fastening off, working them along the wrong side.
- Fold the hood section in half with right sides together and single crochet across the top edge with black yarn to close it.
- Block the whole scarf and hood together to even out the stitches and set the finished shape.
Bigger or smaller
- Smaller
- Drop to a thinner yarn and a smaller hook so each single crochet row sits shorter and narrower, shrinking the finished scarf and hood proportionally.

FAQs
Asked and answered
These answers came from whoever first published the pattern, kept word for word.
Why does the hood need a fold and a seam?
The hood section starts as a flat extension of the scarf, so folding it in half and single crocheting the top edge is what turns it into a wearable hood. Without that seam it stays a flat panel.
