About this pattern

This is a character bag built around a round pink mouth panel, two white eyes, and a set of blue fins, with six rounds total spread across five small parts. The eyes are a single round each, the mouth takes three, and the side fins and shoulder strap each close out in one round apiece, so the piece moves fast once the pieces are lined up.

The mouth panel carries the only real shaping in the set, opening from a joined chain into two straight rounds of single crochet that hold the bag's circumference. The side fins ask for more attention than their round count suggests, since three points have to be placed evenly along the bag edge before the chain-and-double-crochet shell locks them in place. Slow down there and at the join between chain and circle on the mouth.

  1. Work the two white eyes first, since each finishes in a single magic-ring round.
  2. Chain and join the pink mouth into a circle, then build it up over two more rounds.
  3. Mark three points along the bag sides before working the blue fin shells into place.
  4. Add the dorsal fin along the top seam using the same chain-and-double-crochet shell.
  5. Make the shoulder strap in one round and set it aside until assembly.
  6. Glue the face pieces on, then sew the strap and fit the closure.

What goes wrong

  • Eyes glued off-center Dry-fit both eyes with pins before reaching for the glue gun. Step back and check they sit level with each other on the bag front.
  • Mouth chain twisted at the join Lay the starting chain flat on a table before joining it into a circle with a slip stitch. A twist here throws off every round worked after it.
  • Fin points spaced unevenly Mark all three points on one side with stitch markers before working any shells, rather than eyeballing them one at a time.
  • Closure fitted before the strap Sew the shoulder strap to the top of the bag before fitting the tape or fabric closure to the mouth. Working in this order keeps the opening free to handle.

Check your count

  • Eyes · Round 1: 9 sts
  • Mouth · Round 2: 20 sts
  • Mouth · Round 3: 20 sts

Finish

  • Weave in every yarn tail from the eyes, mouth, fins, and strap before gluing anything, since loose ends show through the sc panels.
  • Glue the eyes and mouth onto the front of the bag with a hot glue gun, checking placement is level before the glue sets.
  • Sew the shoulder strap to the top of the bag and fit the tape or fabric closure to the mouth opening to finish the piece.

Bigger or smaller

Smaller
Drop to a finer yarn and a smaller hook. Every round tightens up, shrinking the finished bag while keeping the same shaping sequence.

FAQs

Asked and answered

These answers came from whoever first published the pattern, kept word for word.

Do the eyes need stuffing before they are attached?

No stuffing is called for in the eye rounds. They are glued flat to the bag front as worked.

Can the fins be glued on instead of sewn?

The pattern only lists a hot glue gun and tape or fabric closure as materials, so glue is the intended method for the face pieces. The fins themselves are worked directly onto marked points along the bag rather than attached separately.

What holds the bag closed?

Tape or a fabric closure secures the mouth opening as the final assembly step. No zipper or button is part of this pattern.

Is the shoulder strap adjustable?

The strap is worked as a single fixed-length round and sewn directly to the top of the bag. Length changes would need to happen through yarn or hook substitution rather than the pattern itself.
