About this pattern

This sock is built in pieces worked on the 4.5mm hook: a flat Heel Flap worked back and forth and seamed into a pocket, then the Ankle, Sock Toe, and Foot are each worked in joined rounds. A ruffled cuff is added last using the 5.5mm hook, so the main body keeps one gauge while the shaping happens underneath it.

The real shaping happens in two places: the folded heel flap, where turning rows need to stay even before it gets seamed, and the toe, where Round 2 and Round 3 add stitches to spread the fabric from ring to full width. Slow down at the fold-and-seam step, since the single crochet seam has to catch both layers cleanly or the heel pocket will gap. The ruffle at the end is worked after a hook change, so pace doesn't matter there, only consistency of the shells.

You can easily customize the length, yarn color, and ruffle fullness to suit your personal style, whether the socks are for lounging at home, gifting, or adding a handmade touch to your wardrobe.

  1. Work the heel flap flat in double crochet, turning at the end of each row until it reaches the target length.
  2. Fold the flap in half and single crochet through both layers to seam it into a heel pocket.
  3. Flip the sock inside out so the seam sits hidden on the inside before continuing.
  4. Pick up around the flap in single crochet to build the ankle upward in joined rounds.
  5. Start the toe from a magic ring and increase over a couple of rounds to open it out, then work the foot straight to length.

What goes wrong

  • Counting the starting chain as a stitch The chain at the start of the toe rounds and the ruffle round is stated as not counting as a stitch. Work increases and shells into the actual stitches of the previous round, not into that chain.
  • Uneven turns on the heel flap Turning rows on a flat flap can drift wider or narrower if the turning chain gets missed or doubled. Check the stitch count across before turning each row and unravel back a row if it has shifted.
  • Seaming the flap before flipping Seam the heel flap while the sock is still right side out, then flip the whole piece inside out afterward. Seaming in the wrong orientation puts the bulky seam on the outside of the finished heel.

Sock Toe (4.5mm Hook)

Make a Magic Ring and chain 2 (does not count as a stitch).

Round 1

Work 10 double crochets into the ring and slip stitch to join.

Round 2

Chain 2, 2 double crochets in each stitch around (20 stitches).

Round 3

Chain 2, 1 double crochet in the first stitch, 2 in the next, repeat around (30 stitches).

Foot (4.5mm Hook)

Round 1

Chain 2, double crochet in each stitch around, slip stitch to join.Continue working rounds until the piece measures your total foot length minus 3 inches.

Heel Flap (4.5mm Hook)

Row 1

Chain 2 and work 16 double crochets across half of the stitches.

Row 2

Turn, chain 3, and double crochet across 16 stitches.Repeat back and forth until the flap measures 3 inches long.Fold the flap in half and join the edges with single crochet through both layers. Tie off, cut the yarn, and weave in the end. Flip the sock inside out so the seam is on the inside.

Ankle (4.5mm Hook)

Attach yarn at the heel seam and chain 1.

Round 1

Work 2 single crochets into the side of each double crochet row, 1 single crochet across the front stitches, and 2 single crochets down the other side. Slip stitch to join.Continue working rounds of single crochet until the ankle reaches your desired length (about 6 rows).

Ruffles (5.5mm Hook)

Switch to the 5.5mm hook.

Ruffle Round

Chain 3 (does not count as a stitch). Work 5 triple crochets into each stitch around to form ruffle shells. Slip stitch to join, tie off, cut the yarn, and weave in the ends.

Check your count

  • Sock Toe (4.5mm Hook) · Round 1: 10 sts
  • Sock Toe (4.5mm Hook) · Round 2: 20 sts
  • Sock Toe (4.5mm Hook) · Round 3: 30 sts
  • Foot (4.5mm Hook) · Round 1: 30 sts
  • Heel Flap (4.5mm Hook) · Row 1: 16 sts
  • Heel Flap (4.5mm Hook) · Row 2: 16 sts

Finish

  • Weave in the yarn end left after seaming the heel flap, working it along the inside seam so it stays hidden.
  • Weave in the second end left at the ruffle join, running it through the base of a nearby shell to anchor it.
  • Block the finished sock lightly so the ruffle shells sit open and even instead of curling in on themselves.

Bigger or smaller

Larger
Move up to a bulkier yarn with a larger hook for the sock body, which widens every stitch in the Heel Flap, Ankle, Sock Toe and Foot pieces and loosens the ruffle shells to match.
Smaller or longer
Add or remove rounds on the Ankle or Foot pieces to shorten or lengthen those sections, since both are worked until they reach the desired length rather than a fixed round count.

FAQs

Asked and answered

These answers came from whoever first published the pattern, kept word for word.

Can a different worsted weight yarn replace the suggested one?

Yes, any worsted weight yarn works as long as it pairs well with the 4.5mm and 5.5mm hooks listed. Softer, more elastic yarns tend to give the ruffle shells more flare.

Why does the pattern use two different hook sizes?

The 4.5mm hook keeps the sock body firm enough to hold its shape through the heel, ankle, toe and foot. The 5.5mm hook loosens up the triple crochet shells so the cuff ruffles instead of lying flat.

What are the stitch markers for?

They help track the start of a round through the toe increases and the ruffle shell round, where it is easy to lose the join point. Placing one in the first stitch of each round keeps the slip stitch join accurate.

How is the heel flap length checked while working it?

Measure the flap with the measuring tape as it grows and keep working turning rows until it reaches the length given before folding and seaming. Stopping short leaves a shallow heel pocket.
