About this pattern

This amigurumi dragon comes together from four main parts: a 30-round head, a pair of 22-round legs, a pair of 17-round arms, and a 25-round body. Each piece works in a continuous spiral from a magic ring, so there is no seam to sew closed as the rounds build. Wings and ears are worked separately in rows rather than in the round, giving the dragon its layered profile. Finished, the toy sits at about 15-16 cm, or 21 cm if stood on its feet.

  1. Each piece starts in a magic ring and builds outward in a continuous spiral, with no seams to join along the way.
  2. The head rounds out first, widening steadily before narrowing again to shape the face and snout.
  3. Arms stay in salad green throughout, ending with a folded tip instead of a closed round.
  4. Wings and ears are worked flat in rows, giving the dragon a distinct textured silhouette.
  5. The body closes out the make, ready for the head, legs and arms to be sewn on.

What goes wrong

  • Loose magic ring at the start Pull the tail tight before moving into round two, or the opening round will gap and throw off the stitch count.
  • Eyes placed too early or uneven Hold off on the safety eyes until the head reaches the rounds noted for placement, then check spacing on both sides before pressing them in.
  • Overstuffed arm before folding Keep filling light up to the fold point so the arm lies flat; overstuffing makes the folded single crochet seam hard to close neatly.

Finish

  • Weave in loose ends from each color change and from the start and end of every piece before any stuffing goes in.
  • Stuff the head and body firmly so the toy holds its shape, but keep the arms lightly filled only up to the fold point.
  • Sew the legs, arms, wings, ears and head onto the body with a sewing needle, checking the color panels line up before fastening off.

Bigger or smaller

Larger
Swap in a thicker semi-cotton yarn and a larger hook than the 2 mm specified; the looser gauge scales every part up while the stitch pattern stays the same.
Smaller
Drop to a finer yarn with a smaller hook and work each round snugly; the dragon shrinks proportionally without changing any stitch counts.

FAQs

Asked and answered

These answers came from whoever first published the pattern, kept word for word.

Does this dragon stand on its own?

Yes, it can sit at about 15-16 cm or stand at around 21 cm once the legs and body are stuffed firmly. A firmer stuffing job in the legs and body helps it hold a standing pose.

Can other yarn colors be used instead of salad green and yellow?

Yes, any colors work as long as a semi-cotton yarn similar to the one listed is used. The color change on the legs is a design detail, not a fixed requirement.

What size safety eyes fit this pattern?

Eyes sized 10-15 mm are listed for this toy, and either end of that range suits the head size. Pick based on how large or small a face look is wanted.

Why are the wings and ears worked differently from the rest?

The wings and ears are crocheted flat in rows, while the head, body, legs and arms are worked in continuous spirals. This mix of techniques gives the dragon textured, flatter details against its rounded body.
