About this pattern

This is a circular throw built from a ring of double crochet that spreads outward round by round. The sample here covers 5 rounds, enough to see the shape take hold before the sequence repeats to grow the blanket to whatever size is wanted. Ivory and Hot Pink Shimmer yarn keep the two-tone look simple to follow, and the whole thing works up with just one hook size throughout.

  1. Start with a small ring of double crochet worked in Ivory to form the center of the blanket.
  2. Double the stitch count on the next round so the circle lies flat rather than cupping.
  3. Alternate those loopy rounds with solid rounds worked directly into stitches to lock the arches in place.
  4. Change to Hot Pink Shimmer at a round change for a striped effect, or keep one color throughout.
  5. Repeat the loopy-and-solid sequence outward until the blanket reaches the size wanted.

What goes wrong

  • Miscounting the starting ring Recount the double crochet in round 1 before moving on, since the chain 3 counts as the first stitch and it is easy to add one too many or too few into the ring.
  • Counting the chain space as a stitch Skip over chain spaces when counting double crochet, as the notes make clear, or the stitch count will drift and the circle will stop lying flat.
  • Losing track of loopy versus solid rounds Mark which round type comes next with a stitch marker or a written note, since the pattern relies on alternating them to build the arches correctly.

Main Pattern

Round 1

Make a slip knot leaving a tail to weave in later. Chain 6. Slip stitch into the first chain to form a ring.Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet).Double crochet 19 times into the ring (Total of 20 double crochet including the initial chain 3).Slip stitch to the top of the chain 3 to finish the round.

Round 2

Chain 3 (first double crochet). Place 2 double crochet into each stitch around (Total of 40 double crochet).Slip stitch to the top of the chain 3 to finish the round.

Round 3

Chain 3 (first double crochet), then chain 1. Double crochet into the next stitch, chain 1. Repeat from to until the end of the round (40 double crochet with a chain 1 space in between each).Slip stitch to the top of the chain 3.

Round 4

Chain 5, skip the first chain-1 space, then single crochet into the next chain-1 space.Chain 3, skip a chain-1 space, and single crochet into the next chain-1 space. Repeat this sequence 3 times. Then create a corner by chaining 5, skipping a space, and single crocheting into the next space. Do this once more for the second corner.[Repeat this corner and chain-3 sequence for each side of the blanket.

Round 5

Chain 5 and single crochet into the last space before your previous round's chain-3.Slip stitch into the first chain-5 space and chain 3.Place 9 double crochet into the chain-5 space (you will have a total of 10 double crochet in this space including the chain-3 which counts as a double crochet).Single crochet into the next chain-3 space, chain 3, single crochet into the next chain-3 space. Repeat from to for the other spaces.[Continue placing 10 double crochet into each corner chain-5 space and chain-3 spaces sequence as above.]

Round 6

Slip stitch to join and chain 3. Double crochet in each double crochet from the previous round.Single crochet into the first chain-3 space, chain 3, single crochet into the next chain-3 space, and continue this pattern.[Continue with one double crochet in each double crochet and chain-3 spaces sequences.]

Rounds 7–11

Repeat the given pattern for each round. Row 7 is like Row 3, where you double crochet, chain 1 in each double crochet around the corner and skip the chain-3 spaces.[Create arches and work your chain-3 space sequences as established in previous rounds. Continue these patterns, building out each row as you progress.]

Join

Step 1Once you have reached the desired size of your blanket, finish off the last row.

Step 2Cut the yarn, leaving a tail.

Step 3Weave in all ends with a yarn needle.

Finish

  • Finish off the last round worked and cut the yarn, leaving a tail long enough to thread onto a yarn needle.
  • Thread each tail onto the yarn needle and weave it through nearby stitches on the wrong side, including the tail left from the starting slip knot.
  • Lay the finished blanket flat and block it gently so the rounds sit even and the edges lie flat rather than curling.

Bigger or smaller

Larger
Keep repeating the loopy-and-solid round sequence outward past round 5; each extra pair of rounds adds another ring of arches and increases the overall diameter.
Smaller or different drape
Swap to a smaller hook or a lighter yarn than the Shimmer worsted called for, which tightens the stitches and shrinks the blanket for the same number of rounds.

FAQs

Asked and answered

These answers came from whoever first published the pattern, kept word for word.

How is the finished size decided?

There is no fixed round count for the whole blanket. Work the loopy-and-solid sequence until the piece measures the size wanted, then finish off.

Does the hook size change partway through?

No, the same 4.25 mm hook is used for every round from the starting ring to the last row worked.

What is easy to miscount on this pattern?

The chain-3 at the start of a round and the chain spaces in the loopy rounds are the most common places to lose count. Treat the chain 3 as the first double crochet and leave true chain spaces out of the stitch count.
