About this pattern

This headband works up as a single joined circle, with the whole Main Pattern piece covered in four rounds. The foundation chain is joined into a loop first, so there's no seam to plan for and no separate panels to track. Four rounds sounds short, but each one carries its own stitch, so the tick-box moves fast once the circle is set.

The shaping comes from the stitch sequence rather than increases or decreases: double crochet, crossed double crochet, double crochet, then a bobble stitch row repeating on top of that base. Slow down at the crossed double crochet round, since the crossing motion is easy to lose track of mid-row, and again at the bobble row, where tension controls how pronounced the bumps sit against the flat rounds either side.

  1. Chain a foundation length to match the intended head size, then join it into a circle.
  2. Work the first double crochet round straight around the joined loop to set the base.
  3. Move into the crossed double crochet round, keeping each crossed pair aligned as the circle continues.
  4. Return to a plain double crochet round to settle the fabric before the bobble row.
  5. Finish with the bobble stitch round, which brings the raised texture across the final pass.
  6. Fold the finished circle flat and wrap the center band around it to form the headband shape.

What goes wrong

  • Loose foundation chain join Pull the join stitch snug before working round one so the circle doesn't gap at the seam. A loose join shows as a visible notch once the headband is folded.
  • Losing the crossed double crochet order Keep track of which stitch sits in front and which sits behind as the crossed pairs repeat around the round. Mixing the order flattens the crossed texture and throws off the next round's stitch placement.
  • Uneven bobble stitch tension Keep yarn tension consistent across each bobble so the raised stitches stay the same size around the round. Tight and loose bobbles side by side make the texture look uneven once folded.
  • Skipping the chainless double crochet setup Hold the loop steady while inserting into the first chain for the chainless double crochet start. Rushing this step can slip the loop off the hook before the three loops are secured.

Main Pattern

The length of your foundation chain will depend on the size you're making. For the demonstrated example, 68 chains were used with a 3mm hook.

Foundation Chain

Create a loop on your hook, yarn over, and pull through to make your first chain. Continue yarning over and pulling through until you reach your desired length. Straighten the chain, loop it around, and insert your hook into the first chain to form a circle. Yarn over and pull through to connect, creating the base circumference.

Round 1

Double Crochet Start with a chain of two, or use a chainless double crochet. For a chainless double crochet, pull up your loop, yarn over, and hold the loop.Insert your hook into the first chain, yarn over, and pull through (3 loops on hook).Yarn over, pull through the first two loops, then yarn over and pull through the remaining two.For a regular double crochet, yarn over, insert your hook, yarn over, and pull through.Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, and pull through the last two loops.Repeat this process, placing one double crochet in each chain around.

Round 2

Crossed Double Crochet Start with a chainless double crochet or a chain two. Skip the next stitch, and place a double crochet into the following stitch.Yarn over and work backwards into the skipped stitch, placing another double crochet.Continue this pattern around to create a crossed pattern.

Round 3

Double Crochet This row consists of regular double crochets. Place one double crochet into each stitch around.

Round 4

Bobble Stitch Row Begin by placing five double crochets. Place a slip stitch into the next stitch. For the bobble stitch: Yarn over, insert your hook, yarn over, and pull through.Yarn over, pull through two loops, and leave the rest on the hook.Repeat this 5 more times in the same stitch (6 loops on hook).Yarn over and pull through all six loops.Place a slip stitch into the next stitch.Repeat the pattern of five double crochets, a slip stitch, a bobble stitch, and another slip stitch around.Repeating the Pattern: Repeat the sequence from row 1: Double crochet row Crossed double crochet row Double crochet row Bobble stitch rowContinue this sequence until your desired width is achieved.

Center Band

Create a foundation chain about 2-3 inches long. Place two rows of double crochet. Cut off your yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Join

Step 1Fold your finished product.

Step 2Wrap the center band around the folded headband.

Step 3Use the yarn tail to sew the center band in place.

Step 4Weave in any loose ends.

Finish

  • Weave in the starting and ending yarn tails from the joined foundation circle before shaping begins.
  • Fold the completed piece along its length, then wrap the center band around the fold.
  • Sew the center band in place using the remaining yarn tail, then weave in any ends left loose.

Bigger or smaller

Larger
Lengthen the foundation chain before joining it into a circle, which increases the circumference the headband fits around.

FAQs

Asked and answered

These answers came from whoever first published the pattern, kept word for word.

Can the bobble stitch round be skipped?

Skipping it removes the raised texture the pattern is built around, leaving a plain double and crossed double crochet fabric. The three-round sequence is designed with the bobble round as the finishing texture, so leaving it out changes the look significantly.

Does the foundation chain length need to match 68 chains exactly?

No, 68 chains is the length used for the demonstrated size, not a fixed requirement. Adjust the chain length to fit the head it's intended for, then join it into a circle as described.

What's the difference between a chainless double crochet start and a regular chain-two start?

A chainless double crochet pulls up a loop and works directly into the first chain without adding extra starting chains, keeping the round edge smoother. A chain-two start is the more familiar method and works just as well if the chainless version feels unfamiliar.

Why does the piece get folded before sewing?

Folding turns the flat, joined circle into the doubled headband shape, with the center band wrapped around the fold to hold it together. The fold is what converts the worked piece into its finished wearable form.
