About this pattern

This bookmark pairs a small flower with a leaf-and-chain tail, and the whole thing ticks off in six rounds. Two rounds build the flower itself, four cover the leaf and the length of chain that trails down the spine of a book. It works up fast in DK yarn on a 4mm hook, using two colors so the petals stand apart from the base circle.

The shaping lives almost entirely in round 2 of the flower, where each stitch turns into a petal through a dc2tog, chain, and sc worked into the same spot. Slow down there and keep the marker on the first stitch so the petal count stays even. The leaf rounds ask for a mix of stitch heights along one chain to fake a leaf outline, so watch the stitch changes rather than rushing the row.

  1. Build a small ring of double crochet to form the base of the flower.
  2. Work petals into that ring using a two-stitch cluster followed by a chain and a single crochet.
  3. Start a fresh chain and turn it into a leaf shape by working back along it with stitches of changing height.
  4. Chain again from the leaf to create the long tail that will sit inside the book.
  5. Attach that chain to the back of the flower with slip stitches to join the two pieces.
  6. Weave in the tails left from both colors and trim any excess yarn.

What goes wrong

  • Losing track of the first stitch Keep a stitch marker in the first stitch of round 1 so the join point stays visible when it's time to close the round. Without it, the petal count in round 2 can drift off.
  • Uneven petals in round 2 Work each dc2tog, chain, and sc into the same stitch before moving to the next one. Rushing this sequence is the most common way petals end up different sizes.
  • Leaf sides don't mirror Check the stitch heights on the second side against the first before joining the chain. Since the leaf shape comes from varying sc, hdc, dc, and tr along the chain, a missed stitch height throws off the mirror effect.
  • Chain twists before attaching Lay the chain flat against the back of the flower before starting the slip stitch attachment. A twisted chain will pull the bookmark off-center once it's sewn in place.

Kept in the order and the wording the source used. Tick a round as you finish it; the ticks stay on this device.

Flower

Converted from the designer's UK terms to US terms.

Round 1

Ch 2; work 14 dc into the first chain (use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch); join with a sl st to the top of the first stitch; ch 1, fasten off leaving a long tail for weaving. (14 dc)Weave the tail around the back of the work, pulling tight to close the center circle, then trim any excess yarn.

Round 2

Join petal color yarn with a slip knot; work a dc2tog in each stitch around (insert hook into the stitch, yarn over, pull through, yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, insert into the same stitch, yarn over, pull through, yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through all three loops), then ch 4 and work a sc behind the front two loops of the same stitch to form each petal; repeat all around to create each petal, ensuring the correct number of petals by the end; join with a sl st to the beginning of the round, ch 1, fasten off.Weave in loose ends after completing all petals.

Leaf and Chain

Converted from the designer's UK terms to US terms.

Round 1

Ch 11.

Round 2

Work back along the chain with varying stitches (sc, hdc, dc, tr) to create the leaf shape.

Round 3

Ch 3, then work a sc back into the same stitch to start the other side of the leaf, mirroring the first side.

Round 4

Continue to chain to your desired length (45 ch suggested for a standard book; adjust according to your book size).

Join

Step 1Attach the chain to the back of the flower using slip stitches for secure attachment.

Step 2Weave in the final ends and trim any excess yarn.

Finish

  • Weave the flower's starting tail around the back of the work first, pulling it tight to close the center circle before trimming.
  • Attach the chain to the back of the flower with slip stitches so the join sits flat and won't show from the front.
  • Weave in every remaining end from the flower, leaf and chain, then trim close to the fabric so nothing pokes out.

Bigger or smaller

Smaller
Drop to a lighter yarn with a smaller hook to shrink the flower and leaf together. The chain length can also be adjusted shorter to suit a smaller book.

FAQs

Asked and answered

These answers came from whoever first published the pattern, kept word for word.

Can one color be used for the whole flower instead of two?

Yes, the second color is only there to make the petals stand out from the center circle. Working both rounds in the same yarn still produces a complete flower, just in a single tone.

How long should the chain tail be?

The pattern suggests a length long enough to sit inside a standard book, but it can be adjusted to match a specific book's size. Keep chaining until the tail reaches the depth needed.

Why does round 2 use a dc2tog before each chain?

The dc2tog pulls two stitches together at the base, which gives each petal a pointed foot instead of a flat one. It's what makes the petals look separated rather than joined in one solid ring.

Does the leaf need blocking to hold its shape?

The leaf gets its shape from the mix of stitch heights worked along the chain, not from blocking. Weaving in the ends firmly is usually enough to keep it lying flat.
