About this pattern
Three small cow bodies share the same bulky-yarn, 4.0mm base: a strawberry cow, a banana cow, and a watermelon cow, each ticked off in a main pattern of 8 or 10 rounds. Every variant then adds its own short pieces — horns, ears, nose, and a fruit-themed accent like banana peels, a belly, or a watermelon bag — so the body is the fast part and the trims are what set each cow apart.
The shaping sits in the small pieces more than the body itself. Horns build up over three rounds with a single increase row in the middle, ears finish in one row worked on both sides of a chain, and the banana peel piece repeats five times over seven rounds each. Slow down on the increase rows and on the double-sided ear chain, since a miscount there is the easiest way to end up with lopsided features.
- Work the main pattern rounds first to build the base body in the yarn color for that variant.
- Chain and single crochet the ears in one row, working both sides of the chain for each ear.
- Add the small nose piece and set it aside ready for sewing onto the face.
- the banana cow, repeat the banana peel piece five times before attaching it to the body.
- the strawberry or watermelon variant, finish the belly or bag accent piece before assembling the face.
What goes wrong
- Losing count on the ear chain row Work the ear in order, tracking the single crochet stitches and the increase at the end of the chain so both ears match.
- Sewing horns without checking spacing Mark the horn placement on the body before stitching so both horns sit level and evenly spaced on the head.
- Setting safety eyes after stuffing Insert and lock the plastic safety eyes while the head opening is still wide enough to reach through easily.
- Swapping similar yarn colors between pieces Lay out the neon yellow, yellow, pale pink, and white yarns separately before starting so body yarn is not used for horns, ears, or nose by mistake.

Finish
- Stuff the body firmly while the last rounds of the main pattern are still open, then close and fasten off.
- Pin the horns, ears, nose, and any fruit accent piece in place, set the plastic safety eyes, and sew everything down.
Bigger or smaller
- Larger
- Move up from the 4.0mm hook and a heavier-than-bulky yarn to scale the body, horns, ears, and nose up together while keeping the same round counts.
- Smaller
- Drop to a finer yarn with a smaller hook so the same rounds pull in tighter, shrinking the body and every attached piece to match.

FAQs
Asked and answered
These answers came from whoever first published the pattern, kept word for word.
Does the same body work for all three cow variants?
Yes, the main pattern forms the base body used for the strawberry, banana, and watermelon versions. Only the yarn colors and the extra accent piece — banana peels, belly, or watermelon bag — change between them.
What hook and yarn does this pattern call for?
All three variants use bulky (Category 5) yarn with a 4.0mm (G/6) hook. Colors change by variant, but the weight and hook stay the same throughout.
How many banana peels are needed for the banana cow?
The banana peel piece is made five times, with each peel worked over seven rounds. Repeat it five separate times before attaching the peels to the body.
What size safety eyes should be used?
The cow variant uses 6mm x 9mm plastic safety eyes, while the banana cow uses 6mm x 8mm. Match the eye size to the variant being made.
