About this pattern

This scrunchie builds up from a small flat base into a puffed, dimensional flower, with each petal worked over nine rows before the next one starts. Five petals come off the same strand of yarn, so there is no cutting or rejoining between them, just a turn of the work and a repeat of the row sequence from the beginning.

The shaping does the real work here: the first rows widen the petal with steady increases, the middle rows hold that width flat, and the last rows pull it back in with paired decreases to form the tip. Slow down through the decrease rows, since the four-loops-on-the-hook step is easy to rush and easy to miscount.

  1. Chain a short foundation row and build it up with single and double crochet increases to widen the base of the first petal.
  2. Work a few rows flat once the petal reaches its full width, keeping the stitch pattern steady without adding or removing stitches.
  3. Shift into decrease rows that pull the sides in gradually, shaping the rounded tip at the top of the petal.
  4. Without cutting the yarn, turn the work and repeat the same row sequence to build four more petals in a row.
  5. Edge the whole flower with a ruffled border, working clusters of double crochets and single crochets around the outside.
  6. Join the first and last petals together, then wrap and crochet around a hair tie through the center of the flower.

What goes wrong

  • Losing count on increase rows Mark the start of each row with a stitch marker and count stitches before moving to the next row, since a missed increase throws off every petal after it.
  • Fumbling the four-loop decrease Work the decrease slowly the first few times: yarn over, pull through two loops, then yarn over and pull through the remaining three loops in one motion.
  • Uneven ruffle clusters around the edge Keep the chain-three and two-double-crochet cluster in the same stitch each time, and the single crochet strictly in the next stitch, so the ruffle sits even all the way around.
  • Cutting yarn between petals Leave the yarn attached after finishing one petal and simply turn the work to start the next, since the whole flower is meant to come from one continuous strand.

Yarn, hook and the rest

Copied from the source pattern's own materials list.

  • Yarn (1 skein of 50g for large scrunchy, less for a smaller version)
  • Crochet hook (4 mm)
  • Stuffing (or leftover yarn scraps)
  • Elastic band
  • A bit of white yarn for finishing

Start

Make a starter loop and chain 12 (10 plus 2 additional to turn).

Row 1

Yarn over, insert the hook into the third loop from the hook (the one on the hook doesn’t count), and make a double crochet. Continue with double crochet in every chain. You should have 10 double crochets.

Row 2

Turn your work. Insert your hook into the first loop, do a single crochet, then in the first loop of the following single crochet, make another single crochet. Then, two double crochets in each of the next stitches until the row ends, totaling 20 double crochets.

Row 3

Repeat the starting single crochet pattern, then do a pattern of one double crochet in the next stitch followed by two double crochets in the subsequent stitch till the end, reaching 30 double crochets.

Expanding the Petal

Row 4

Start with the single crochet pattern, then mix one double crochet and two double crochets in one stitch (increase) throughout the row to get 38 stitches.

Rows 5–6

Repeat the 38 double crochets from the previous row without increases to establish the petal's size.Decreasing for the Petal Tip:

Row 7

Begin with a single crochet and then one double crochet before doing your decreases - yarn over, insert the hook, pull through two loops, yarn over, insert into the next stitch, pull yarn through, you'll have four loops on the hook. Crochet through two loops then the last three together. Continue with two double crochets and a decrease pattern until the row ends.

Row 8

Similar to row 7, but with a pattern of one decrease followed by one double crochet across the row.

Row 9

Make only decreases across the entire row.

Creating Additional Petals

To make additional petals (for a total of five), do not cut the yarn. Turn your work and repeat the pattern from Row 1 to Row 9 for each new petal.

Joining Petals and Finishing

Join the first and final petals' edges together using slip stitches for a total of 10 stitches.

Position the hair tie at the center of the connected petals.

Join the edges around the hair tie with single crochet stitches, making sure to fit two single crochets into each row for a snug fit. Between petals, insert the hook directly into the center of the hair tie for a long single crochet.

Additional Decoration (Optional)

For ruffles, start with a slip stitch into the first single crochet, chain three, and then in the same stitch, do two double crochets followed by a single crochet in the next stitch. Continue this pattern all around the edge for a ruffled look.

Finish

  • Weave in the starting tail and any join ends on the back of the flower, where they will sit against the hair.
  • Tuck stuffing or leftover yarn scraps into the petals before closing them up, so the flower keeps its puffed shape instead of lying flat.
  • Center the hair tie behind the joined petals and crochet around it with the finishing yarn, pulling snug so the elastic stays fully hidden.

Bigger or smaller

Smaller
Start with a chain of 17 instead of 12 as noted for the smaller version, which shortens the base row and scales every petal down to match.

FAQs

Asked and answered

These answers came from whoever first published the pattern, kept word for word.

Does the yarn need to be cut between petals?

No, the pattern is written so the same strand carries straight through all five petals. Only cut the yarn once the final petal is finished and ready for joining.

What is the stuffing for?

Stuffing or leftover yarn scraps are tucked inside the petals to give the flower its puffed, dimensional look rather than lying flat. A small amount is enough since the goal is light volume, not firmness.

How does the hair tie attach to the flower?

The elastic band sits at the center of the joined petals and gets crocheted around directly with single crochet stitches. Between petals the hook goes right into the center of the hair tie for a long single crochet that keeps it secured.

Can this pattern be made smaller for a child?

Yes, starting with a chain of 17 instead of the standard chain gives a smaller version of the same scrunchie. Everything else in the pattern stays the same, just scaled down from that shorter starting chain.
